Answer

Hi - thanks for your email April. Your question was - when can a dog first be diagnosed as “pregnant” after breeding?

The answer is:

Pregnancy can be diagnosis by abdominal ultrasound approximately 16 to 18 days after ovulation. It is more reliable a little later - such as 20 to 26 days.

Radiographs (X-rays) can be used to diagnose pregnancy after about 42 to 45 days.

An article that might be helpful to you is Pregnancy in Dogs.

Best of luck!
